Does a High PSA Always Mean Prostate Cancer?
A high PSA level does not automatically mean you have prostate cancer. PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a substance made by the prostate. A blood test can measure PSA levels, but several conditions can cause them to rise. An enlarged prostate, infection, or inflammation can all lead to a higher PSA level.
If your PSA is high, there is no need to panic. A high PSA is a sign that your healthcare provider may need to look more closely, but it is not a diagnosis of cancer. Your provider may recommend repeating the PSA test or doing additional tests to understand the cause. The important thing is to discuss your results with your healthcare provider and follow up when recommended.
